I posted this information on CC and meant to do so here but didn't get a round tuit. So here goes.......

In the general Forum area of Casita Club, Jack dog posted a thread entitled Glacier National Park Trip. I put a couple of posts there about campgrounds where I had stayed and a trip was suggested by my friend, Jerry C. Then AZ Eileen mentioned a "tour" and some others indicated that they would be interested in going. We don't think it could be properly called a tour but might be classified as a "gathering". Sadly, AZ Eileen will not be able to attend as she has obligations during the time we plan to meet.

We have no firm dates other than about the last week of August. We don't want to wait much later than that as fall often comes early to the northern Rockies. It is very possible to get some snow in the highest reaches on almost any day of the year but August has always been nice in my experience.

We don't have a firm meeting place yet. I checked and there are many reservations available for the late August time frame. Culinary water and dump stations are available at most campgrounds in the park, but not all.

At this point we have not discussed how long we plan to stay. We do plan on staying the bulk of the time within the park. Jerry will be coming from the east. I will be coming from the south. It might be possible to meet with anyone interested at some point and caravan together, or we could meet at the park. Some of us could meet in Salt Lake City and caravan together. Others could meet someplace else.

It is not the kind of gathering where we sit in camp all day and look at each other. "Evening campfire" is the time for that. We plan to see as much of the park as we can so we will mostly likely be gone sight seeing most days. We could go together as a group or individually. Jerry is an avid hiker and photographer. He reminds me of a mountain goat. I prefer more level "walks". I always like to go over the border and see Waterton NP in Canada. If you do this you will now need a passport. No longer like the good ol' days.

Planning for just a couple of Casitas is different than for several. That is the reason for this post. If you have an interest in this trip and think you might be able to accompany us, please post your thoughts. We would love to have you come along. We will work out the details later.

As it now stands, there are three definite participants and two more "probables". Now is your opportunity to go with a fun group to see one of the most beautiful national parks in the U.S.

May I also suggest to those of you who are attending the Glacier Gathering. Give yourself a day to visit Bigfork MT about an hour from the West entrance to Glacier. It's a sweet little artsy fartsy town on the tip of Flathead Lake.

If you want more suggestions for visits, great places to eat, raft company's, fishing guides etc, post your question here and I will try to answer. We use to own an Rv Park just outside west Glacier so I know the area pretty well.

Thank you very much for your response and volunteering to provide us with information. There is nothing like knowing someone who really knows the area of interest. I'm sure we will have many questions for you.

We plan to spend most of our time there inside the park and camp there. Assuming you have seen most of the park many times, do you have a favorite campground inside the park for outdoor ambiance? Maybe a particular area of the park? I have made three visits there but there is much I have never seen.

Your Welcome Don. I am sure some places have changed but I have a ton of friends there so I can always ask them if I am not sure about something.

As far as campgrounds, (this is from someone whom prefers full hookups so to recommend a primitive campground is a real stretch for me. :prankster2: And having never camped in the Park itself I can only give you my opinion on what I saw driving thru them. First off, I prefer Everything West Glacier! It's just a prettier part of the park. That is not to say there isn't things to see on the East Side because there definitely is a ton to see there. It's just not as pretty as the West side and the west side tends to be much cooler and since all the campgrounds in the park are primitive keeping your eggs cool will be better accomplished on the forested West side of Glacier.
. From driving thru both Apgar and Fish Creek campgrounds, I like both. Apgar being closer to Apgar Village, you can walk to town. But I did like Fish Creek better. But either are beautiful! Frankly Aug in Glacier is gonna be about finding reservation and not necessarily about where you want to stay.

Have you made any reservations? I would certainly check on that. If they are full and you need a suggestion for something outside the park, let me know. I know of plenty campgrounds and what they are like as far as ambiance, if their bathrooms are clean and if their owners are nice! LOL........... I know most of them.

We haven't received many responses from this site. Maybe that's my fault but here is the itinerary for what seems to be shaping up to be a great rolling rally with some great folks participating. If you are interested give me a shout. There is plenty of room for you.

Glacier National Park Casita Gathering Itinerary
August 22 – August 28, 2010

Aug 22 – Meet at Fish Creek Campground in western area of the park. Set up camp, meet and greet, discuss plans for park exploration and decide if we want to sight see together or independently. Reservations should be made in this campground for three nights - Aug 22, Aug 23 and Aug 24.

Aug 25 – Depart Fish Creek Campground, in caravan, and proceed to the eastern area of the park. Since we are not permitted to tow our trailers over the Going to the Sun Road we will need to traverse Hwy 2 around the southern end of the park. We will not have reservations but believe we will have no problems finding campsites at either Two Medicine or other east side campgrounds. Historically, most campgrounds on the eastern side of the park seldom fill, and then only late evening. The exception is Many Glacier campground, which is the most popular (probably because of pay shower availability) and sometime fills as early as 10:00 a.m. Reservations are not available for this campground.

Aug 25 – Aug 28 – The plan it to continue to sight see, hike and plan to spend a night camping in Waterton Lake NP in Canada. If you plan to participate in this side trip you will need documentation to gain entrance into Canada. Handguns are banned in Canada but can be checked at the border and reclaimed upon our return.

Detailed information about the park, campgrounds and facilities can be obtained by accessing this interactive link that is very complete. http://www.nps.gov/g...sit/camping.htm
We plan to camp only inside the park and stay at campgrounds that have culinary water and dump stations available.

FLASH!
Please reserve your spot in Fish Creek CG as soon as you receive this. Jerry C has researched the available sites close together and found these available during our planned stay. In B Loop, campsites B70 thru B78 are available for the time frame we will be there. Campsites B70, B72, B74, B76 and B78 are nearest the creek and may afford added ambiance. Jerry C has reserved B72 and I have reserved B74. All sites are full shade.

Lots of posts about this get together on the "other forum". From Glacier some of us are going to drop in at Yellowstone for a few days. The more the merrier!

This is our first attempt to communicate on any forum.

We picked up our casita 6/10/10, but we have only now begun to enjoy her. (I'm a sailor, all my vessels are "her".) We left home on august 4th. and will leave yellowstone west entrance, 8/23. We had planned to visit the grand tetons and then spend some time in glacier. We only saw your gathering this evening and are hopeful we might arrange to join up with you.

We can't get into the casita club forum tonight, try as we might. We think there is more info that would be helpful to us.

We are very new to this. We are on at least a two month adventure for perhaps as many as 8,000 miles or more. Tonight we are in Colo Spgs (that is what was on the sign) co. we can usually get internet, but we are entering into terra incognita.

We will monitor this site as well as the casita club forum (if it will come up).

I've been told, I type in capital letters and it might be taken as if i'm shouting. I typed all my own letters, during my career with printing and publishing companies and always knew an editor read it without offence. He knew it was easier for me not to hit the shift key all the time. when a reporters piece would be set in type, the typeografer would take care of those details.

Welcome! The "other" Casita site sometimes takes an extended time to get into (in my case about 4 months, and now that I'm in I use it very little). This iste is "THE BEST"! Look out for those bears in that area. We're headed out that way (from FL) tomorrow - Denver and then North into WY. Have a wonderful time! If you don't hear from anyone about the get together, just "show up" and you will receive a WARM welcome!

Below is the gist of the information you need. We would love to have you join us. I think you can read the posts on Casitaclub without being a member, but not sure. Try to access Casitaclub.com, go to get together forums and look under glacier gathering. The main thing is to make reservations in Fish Lake Campground in West Glacier for the nights of Aug 22-24. If you aren't familiar with Recreation.gov just call 1-877-444-6777. They will make your reservation over the phone. Hope you can make it.

We have reserved B70 for the nights of 8/23 and 8/24. I don't know how long it will take us to reach Fish Creek from West Yellowstone, but we'll get there, the Good Lord willing.
We look forward to meeting with you for at least those two evenings.

That will depend greatly on the number of bison, bear or elk jams you encounter travelling through the park!! Be on your toes while driving through Yellowstone country.........

We thank you atrometer, jerryc, doninut and possum and especially Gene, for your kind welcome and advice.

Our adventure from Canyon Lake Texas, thus far has been fantastic. Our new egg has performed flawlessly, even when I have made rookie mistakes. (I towed a 17 foot Coachmen Rover with a 78 Ford Country Squire wagon, outfitted to tow with the 440 V8, when my kids were pre teen and teens.) The Gray Ghost has towed effortlessly while we have enjoyed its comfort.

We are looking forward to the gathering and will continue to keep the rubber side down.
